Endocrinology
The aim of the endocrinology department is to treat pathologies linked with structure or functioning alteration of the endocrine glands. The endocrine glands (like thyroid, adrenal gland, pituitary gland, ovaries, parathyroid…) produce some substances called hormones, that act as regulators of the main vital processes. For this reason, a gland gap can modify the functionality of several apparatus in different ways:
- a modified thyroid functioning can compromise the cardiac rhythm
- an excess of adrenal gland hormones can cause a drug resistant secondary hypertension
- a damaged pancreas can lead to mellitus diabetes
- a pituitary gland dysfunction compromise fertility
- an excess of parathyroid hormone can lead to osteoporosis and to kidney stones
- cancers can begin in the endocrine glands; they are usually benign, but sometimes that can be malignant.
Who should schedule this appointment?
The Endocrinology is useful for all those people who discovers to have a thyroid dysfunction (hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism) or a thyroid nodule. It helps women with modified thyroid function due to pregnancy, or patients affected by mellitus diabetes. Moreover, the endocrinologist can perform consultations for patients affected by adrenal glands nodules or pituitary adenoma, or to recognize calcium metabolism disorders (hypercalcemia, osteoporosis, kidney stones), or to perform a screening for the secondary hypertension.
