General Surgery

The General Surgery outpatient unit deals with those diseases and conditions that require or may require surgery for their diagnosis or treatment.

Surgical procedures for diagnostic purposes, also known as biopsy, are used to collect tissue samples for histological examination for a more accurate and definitive diagnosis.

Surgical procedures for therapeutic purposes are intended to remove a tissue or an organ affected by a malignant or benign disease (e.g. neoplasms, skin neoplasms, gallstone, cysts, lipomas, etc.) or to correct abnormal anatomical condition resulting in discomfort or risk of complications (e.g.: hernias, incisional hernias, varicose veins, hemorrhoids, etc.) or to treat infections which cannot be resolved by medical treatment or which are at risk of rapid evolution (e.g. abscesses/phlegmons, ingrown nails, fistulas, granulomas, hidradenitis, etc.).

In some cases, diagnostic surgery is also therapeutic (excisional biopsy) as in the case of benign skin lesions (e.g. cysts, lipomas) or precancerous or low malignancy lesions (for example: moles, basal-cell carcinomas).

At the end of the consultation, the specialized doctor provides the patient with clinical information, recommends the diagnostic-therapeutic course of action and issues a clinical report for the General Practitioner.

If a surgical treatment is recommended, MediClinic offers outpatient settings equipped for outpatient surgery under local anesthesia. If an outpatient treatment is not recommended or possible, operating theaters for surgical procedures involving same-day observation are available.

WHO COULD BENEFIT FROM THIS SERVICE?

The General Surgery outpatient unit is intended for patients who are in the above conditions and who have already been visited by other specialists or by a General Practitioner, or for patients who contact us directly to be assessed for potential surgical treatment.

In addition, the General Surgery outpatient unit offers two correlated services: colonproctology and digestive endoscopy.

DIGESTIVE ENDOSCOPY

MediClinic offers the possibility to undergo, under the safest and most comfortable conditions, the two main diagnostic investigations for the study of the digestive tract: the esophagogastroduodenoscopy (gastroscopy) and the colonoscopy. Thanks to on-screen images, these investigations can identify possible diseases and/or changes at the upper digestive system (esophagus, stomach and duodenum) and at the lower digestive system (rectum, colon and end tract of the ileum).
If the patient so wishes, anesthesia (deep sedation) can be administered by an Anesthetist, allowing the patient to sleep through the whole examination without feeling any discomfort.
Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (gastroscopy) and colonoscopy involve the insertion, respectively through the mouth and the anus, of a probe with a miniature camera on its tip which casts the images of the upper and lower digestive tract on a monitor, magnified and in high definition, with the possibility of being electronically processed and recorded.

In addition to visual diagnosis, these investigations allow tissue samples to be collected (biopsies) for an histological examination and, in some cases, to remove any precancerous neoformations (polyps) for histological definition.
For these reasons, esophagogastroduodenoscopy (gastroscopy) and colonoscopy are considered to be the main investigations not only for the study of digestive tract diseases, but also for the early diagnosis and prevention of neoplasms.

Who could benefit from this service?

Digestive Endoscopy is the primary diagnostic examination for the study of the upper and lower digestive tracts. It is recommended for the prevention and early diagnosis of neoplasms, for several clinical cases where ruling out a suspected disease or an involvement of the digestive tract is necessary, for long-term follow-up of possible diseases and the recommended therapies.
