3D mammogram with Tomosynthesis

3D mammogram with tomosynthesis is a three-dimensional digital diagnostic technique. The images, obtained from different perspectives, are layered and subsequently combined and displayed to create a three-dimensional picture of the breast. The breasts can thus be analyzed in detail, eliminating image overlaps, and revealing those lesions that could otherwise be difficult to detect. The images are obtained with several projections obtained in sequence through the movement of the tube for a certain period of time; these layers are then synthesized to form the image of the breast in its entirety. The exposure time remains unchanged and the increase in the absorbed radiation dose is negligible. 3D mammogram with tomosynthesis increases the diagnostic accuracy as it allows the identification of lesions that might be less visible with the traditional mammogram, making it the most suitable investigation for the early diagnosis of breast cancer.

Who should schedule this appointment?

The mammogram is recommended to women from 40 to 69 years of age, the female population group most affected by breast cancer. The prevention phase can now start from the age of 35 in case of positive family medical history involving 2 or more first-degree relatives.

What to expect?

The 3D mammogram with tomosynthesis is performed by placing the breast on a platform and applying a light pressure. As in the digital mammography, 4 exposures are made through an oscillating movement of the X-ray tube. The images collected are then processed to be displayed on dedicated reading monitors called workstations. The 3D mammogram with tomosynthesis does not require any specific preparation.

Why choose MediClinic?

MediClinic, an excellent facility in the province of Padua, uses digital technologies that offer the innovative 3D digital mammogram in addition to traditional 2D mammogram. The 3D mammogram technology allows the physician to obtain high definition images that can further be processed to highlight any structural alterations (nodules, thickenings, calcifications) that can draw attention to a suspicious lesion. The 3D digital mammogram with tomosynthesis is particularly indicated in breasts with a high gland component (defined as DENSE) because thanks to the image processing technology, the diagnostic accuracy increases.

Other breast tests

The ultrasound, when performed after the mammogram, allows a targeted study of suspected lesions (nodules, structural distortions). In absence of symptoms, it is recommended to perform an ultrasound examination at around the age of 30 to obtain information on the anatomical structure of the breast and to plan personalized follow-up tests. The breast examination must always complete the instrumental study because it allows to identify peripheral lesions that may not be visible during the mammogram (for example in the anatomical areas near the sternum and mammary sulcus), assessing also the existence of possible secretions from the nipples. If surgery is required, the patient may refer to the breast surgeon recommended by the facility.
