Colonproctology
MediClinic’s Colonproctology outpatient unit provides consultation, diagnosis and specialized treatment for diseases affecting the last tract of the intestine (rectum-anus).
Hemorrhoids are the most common condition of the anus and can be treated differently from the past, depending on the clinical picture and, in most cases, in an outpatient setting and without pain. At an early stage, rubber band ligation, sclerosis, photocoagulation with infrared rays and leaser treatments are the most commonly used techniques. These pain-free techniques are almost always are performed in an outpatient setting, and in most cases they lead to a resolution or at least a significant improvement of the clinical picture while avoiding surgery.
Surgery may be recommended in more severe clinical settings but, again, different techniques are available depending on each specific case. These techniques are explained to the patient and discussed during the consultation.
At any rate, all these techniques lead to a faster recovery and significantly reduced painful symptoms compared to the past. Symptoms last a few days and are possibly treated with mild analgesics such as paracetamol or NSAIDs for a rapid resumption of the patient’s activities.
Other frequently detected – and sometimes rather painful – proctological conditions are anal fissures and abscess or perianal fistulas; in most cases, these conditions can currently be treated in an outpatient setting as well.
In most cases, symptomatic onsets of proctological conditions entail anal pain and/or bleeding. However, it should be noted that neoplasms or other severe diseases can also occur with the same symptomatic onsets. Therefore, avoiding self-medication and symptoms underestimation, and to rapidly undergo proctological examination for a firm diagnosis, is absolutely necessary.
Although not painful, the proctological consultation may cause discomfort and embarrassment: special care is thus taken to put the patient at ease.
At the end of the consultation, the specialized doctor provides the patient with clinical information, recommends the diagnostic-therapeutic course of action and issues a clinical report for the General Practitioner.
Who could benefit from this service?
The Colonproctology specialized unit is dedicated to all patients with anal and intestinal disorders for whom a firm diagnosis is always advisable to decide on the most appropriate treatment and to avoid complications over time, or worse, that an underestimation occurs and that preneoplastic or neoplastic conditions go undetected.
