Regenerative surgery in Orthopedics
MediClinic’s Orthopedics Regenerative Surgery service treats all tissue regenerative therapies that do not require postoperative night stay.
The specialists of MediClinic’s Regenerative Orthopedics Surgery service have in-depth knowledge and up-to-date skills in the orthopedic field.
Innovative regenerative surgical treatments: tendinopathies, osteoarthritis or cartilage problems
Osteoarthritis is the most common joint pathology: it is caused by the deterioration of the cartilage, a tissue that covers the bone surfaces inside the joints, and by the aging of the joint tissues.
The mainly affected joints are those subjected to the greatest load, therefore those of the lower limbs: knee, ankle, hip. The absence of blood vessels, the reduced proliferative potential of the chondrocytes, determines the inability of the cartilage to regenerate and the worsening of the clinical picture overtime.
Who could benefit from this service?
Regenerative medicine is indicated in degenerative conditions, both at the osteo-articular level such as shoulder, knee, hip, ankle and elbow osteoarthritis and at the cartilage level; it is therefore recommended for patients who have not already developed osteoarthritis and tendinopathies such as epicondylitis, epitrocleitis, patellar tendon conditions and Achilles tendon disorders.
It has the aim of improving the patient’s clinical condition, the status of the joints and therefore the quality of life, reducing the pain and improving the range of motion of the affected joint that, in case of knee arthrosis with bone and cartilage degeneration, makes difficult for the patient to perform daily activities such as climbing stairs or riding a bicycle.
Regenerative surgery is a minimally invasive procedure performed under mild sedation, local anesthesia at the level of the hips and two micro incisions.
Thanks to the aid of very thin cannulas, a liposuction, i.e. the removal of adipose tissue, is performed. Body fat sucked from the abdomen is cleaned of impurities to be re-injected into the affected joint, in order to reduce pain and improve the “range of motion”, that is, the articulation of the joint.
Thanks to the injection of the mesenchymal cells of which body fat is very rich, a layer of cells is thus recreated reproducing the hyaline cartilage.
